What Is a Weekender Bag? (And Do You Actually Need One?)
What is a weekender bag?
A weekender is the bag sized for two to four nights away. Big enough to skip a suitcase, small enough to carry down a station platform without a taxi on the other end. The shape is wide, soft-sided, opens down the middle like a book, and sits upright on its own when you set it down. Most of them sit in the 40 to 50 litre range, which is the volume that lets you pack a change of clothes, a washbag, a charger and a paperback without having to sit on the bag to close it.
Outside that range the bag stops being a weekender. Below 35 litres you are repacking in the hotel room to find a sock. Above 55 litres you have reinvented a small suitcase, lost the point of carrying it, and probably checked it at the airport.
How it is different from a holdall, and from a duffel
The three soft-sided travel bags get used interchangeably, but they are not the same. A weekender is sized for two to four nights and is built to be carried: short grab handles, sometimes a detachable shoulder strap, and a base wide enough to stand on. A holdall is the longer, often slimmer version, closer to a doctor's bag in silhouette and usually carried by the handles alone. A duffel is the cylindrical gym-bag shape, almost always with a long shoulder strap and very little structure.
The longer comparison, including which one suits which kind of trip, is in our holdall versus weekender versus duffel guide. The short version is: weekender for the city, holdall for the railway journey, duffel for the boot of the car.
What fits inside, and what does not
A weekender in the right size will take:
- two changes of clothes (folded flat, not rolled),
- a washbag,
- a pair of shoes (in a shoe bag, against the bottom panel),
- a paperback or a slim notebook,
- a laptop charger and a phone charger.
It will not comfortably take:
- a suit, unless you fold it around a board and accept that it will need a press on arrival,
- a hardback book, unless you are willing to lose the space to it,
- a full-size hairdryer or a pair of heavy boots,
- anything that needs to arrive unwrinkled at a wedding.
For a UK city break, the standard weekender load is a single change of clothes, a washbag and a paperback, with room to spare. The full packing list is in our UK city break guide.
Why the material matters more than the size
A weekender lives in the back of a car, on a wet platform and under a hotel bed. Waxed canvas shrugs off all three. A pure cotton canvas gets damp and stays damp; a leather bag is handsome but heavy and will mark on the underside. A hybrid, with a waxed canvas body and full-grain leather on the base, handles and the strap points, takes the use without the punishment. Why we build it that way is on the making-of page.
Do you actually need one?
You need one if any of these are true: you take two or three short trips a year and refuse to check a bag; you commute with a backpack but travel with something softer; you want one bag that lives by the front door and is always packed for the weekend. If none of those are true, a holdall or a backpack with a luggage strap will cover the same trips and free up the closet.
The honest answer for most people who travel twice a year is no. The honest answer for anyone whose diary has even one quarterly overnight is yes, because the weekender will be the bag that makes you say yes to the trip.
How to choose between the ones we make
Our weekender collection is built around two shapes: a soft, zip-top canvas weekender sized for two to three nights, and a slightly larger holdall for three to four. The weekender is the right answer if you carry it on and off a train; the holdall is the right answer if you load it into a car boot and want it to keep its shape. Either way, the bag will outlast the next four trips you have not booked yet.
If you want to dig into the carry choices more broadly, the canvas backpack guide covers the daily version of the same decision.
